CHI LUNG-FEN: A famous Chinese general and a
master of HSING-I during the late MING DYNASTY
(1368-1644). Chi Lung-fen eventually became
disillusioned with HSING-I, which had abandoned
its more refined, spiritual roots and became just a
means of employing brute force against an
opponent. Seeking what he believed to be the true
path of HSING-I, he wandered across CHINA for
thirty years in search of a teacher who understood
the essence of the art. Finally, in the SHENSI
province, he came across a Taoist hermit who gave
him the book that YUEH FEI, HSING-I's founder,
had written centuries earlier. Some time later, Chi
Lung-fen returned to his hometown of Shanghai.
Hundreds of students flocked to him, among them
MA HSIEH-LI from the Honan province and TS'AO
CHI-WU from the Shansi province. Both later
developed their own particular styles and schools.
However, students of HSING-I until today trace
their art to Chi Lung-fen. (See also Hsing-I article).
